Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
The Wolf by Wolf series answers the famous question of "What if the Nazis had won the war?" While it is certainly not the first book to do so, it is a fresh and innovative twist that mixes supernatural elements and history. Yael, our main character is a Jewish shapeshifter that works for the resistance. With her ability, she kidnaps Adele Wolf, the famous motorbike racer that won the (in)famous Axis motorcycle competition. Yael will impersonate Adele at the next tournament in the hopes of getting close enough to the Führer at the Victor's ball to strike him the final blow. In the first volume, we follow Yael as she races across land, desert and jungle. It is fast-paced and devilishly entertaining. The racers are merciless, and they will stop at nothing to win it all, if they fail, it could mean death. The second book (no spoilers!) is not as fast-paced, but it is still quite thrilling. The rapidity and the subsequent addictiveness that comes with this series is by far its biggest strength overall. Combine that with a cheesy and cliché romance which all love to hate and it makes for a fantastic combo. The biggest downside of the duology lies in the feeling of immaturity. While it is fast-paced and entertaining, it is made of tropes that we have seen before and are present in most adventure novels. It remains very well done, but it is frustrating to see such a fascinated concept being led by typical YA tropes like the girl with a troubled past that acts all tough, the bad boy with a heart and the occasionally loyal brother. The immaturity can also be felt in the writing style which comes at a surprise as Graudin is an experienced writer. After two of her books, I still cannot determine what makes her original or standout in an hefty crowd. It all just felt a little bland. Overall, nobody will ever really dislike this book (unless they have something against YA, then they will hate all of it): it is entertaining, fast, has a little PG romance and plot-twists that’ll give you the satisfaction of saying “I knew it!” I would recommend this to history nerds, but not purists who will be triggered by the anachronical details. It is also a great first choice to initiate someone to YA, but to an ol’ soul like it was just more of the same.
